AMG’s new baby – the M157 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 – is finding a home in nearly every new Mercedes product, and when fitted to the CLS63 the blown mill is good for 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque… in standard form. Option up for the AMG Performance Package and Merc’s in-house tuner turns up the boost from 14.5 to 18.8 psi and output rises to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of twist. Equipped with AMG’s seven-gear “Speedshift” MCT automatic tranny, the CLS63 takes an estimated 4.4 seconds to run from 0-60 in standard guise and 4.3 seconds with the AMG pack. Similarly, top speed also rises from 155 to 186 mph with the performance upgrade. And if you care, both variants clock in at 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.


In addition to the reworked engine and transmission, the front axle has been widened by nearly an inch and AMG fitted its independent adaptive suspension with electronic damping and a three-stage traction control system. The 19-inch, five-spoke wheels are wrapped in 255/35 tires in front and 285/30s out back, while 14.2-inch drilled and ventilated discs are fitted at all four corners.


A special “Launch Edition” will be available when the CLS63 goes on sale this coming summer and comes coated in matte grey paint with a mix of carbon fiber and piano black interior trim, alcantara headliner and AMG sports seats swathed in “Corteccia Pearl” leather. We expect the F30 to formally debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Convertibles, coupes, M3s, a traditional wagon and a 3-Series Gran Turismo will follow as BMW expands the 3-Series model lineup.



Our illustrator consulted with inside sources who revealed that the new car will ride on a slightly longer wheelbase – up around an inch and a half – but will have considerably shorter overhangs. In addition to giving the car a sportier look, the longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs preserve its small exterior dimensions that help give it its legendary handling.



Look for some of the upcoming X3′s design language to carry over into the 3; Chris Bangle’s flame surfacing is long gone and the X3 is expected to introduce a series of design cues. Yet don’t count out the current 5-Series, which has returned to its crisply tailored look for the 2011 model year. The 5-Series and the Z4 lend their forward-pushing snouts and increasingly sharp angles.

The Singer 911′s engine achieves its displacement with Ninemeister 103mm pistons and cylinders, the 76.4mm crankshaft of the 997 GT3, and the 132mm lightweight titanium connecting rods. The large bore, short stroke combination can spin to 8000 rpm, but offers a broad, flexible torque curve. The key to the power are the highly developed Ninemeister billet aluminum heads that allows this 12-valve engine to compete with the power of water-cooled 24-valve engines found in the latest version of the GT3. A completely re-engineered component the billet aluminum Ninemeister heads are stronger, more resistant to extreme heat, and feature the latest thinking in port design to vastly improve the breathing and output of these motors.

Capitalizing on modern materials technology, 2012 New Sport Car Singer 911 body makes extensive use of carbon fiber panels, and autoclave pre-preg Kevlar honeycomb in the creation of stunning, but very lightweight exterior pieces. The Singer 911 prototype is finished in vintage-appearing Singer Racing Orange. Other colors will be available to customers. In addition to the modern interpretation of the lightweight philosophy, the exterior will be updated with a uniquely designed HID headlamp arrangements that greatly improves exterior lighting.


2012 New Sport Car Singer 911 looks like a vintage 911, and maintains some of the same character, but the connections its exterior evokes is unique. There are hints of 911R in the taillights and bumper design, as well as RSR in the bulbous flares, or even some 911ST in the profile, but there is no mistaking that upon closer inspection the Singer 911 is a very different interpretation of these vintage themes. Beneath that “long hood” emulating skin is the heart of the last air/oil cooled 911(type 993) and a host of the latest technology that places the Singer 911 in a place all its own. The car protects the romance of the original 911 concept but radically modernizes it into an ultimate 911 expression for the enthusiast who can never forget time spent behind the wheel of the car that started life as the 901 Concept. The upcoming 2012 Mazda5 just showed us its smiling face, and Mazda's flowing design language is visible everywhere on it. The mini people mover has gotten a displacement increase up from the old 2.3-liter and is now powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Three trims are available, entry-level, Sport and Touring, and a five-speed automatic transmission comes standard on all of them. Thankfully, the Sport is available with a six-speed manual gearbox.

 

 

Incorporating the Nagare "flow" design has brought the 2012 Mazda5 in line with the rest of the family. Not only that, it adds a slightly elegant touch to a vehicle that has always offered solid utility alongside a fun driving experience.
